At Ecenbarger Eye Care, we prioritize educating our patients about their eye conditions and the available options to help them see more comfortably and clearly. Patients with astigmatism are no longer limited to wearing glasses only. Let’s explore the intricate world of astigmatism and how cutting-edge contact lens technology is providing more patients with a choice of how they see clearly.
Understanding Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a refractive error caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens, leading to blurred or distorted vision. Unlike a perfectly round cornea, an eye with astigmatism is more football-shaped, causing light to focus unevenly on the retina. This can result in difficulties with both near and far vision, as well as issues like eye strain and headaches.
Historically, patients with astigmatism may have struggled to wear contact lenses because traditional spherical contact lenses only correct for nearsightedness or farsightedness and not the unique curvature of the eye associated with astigmatism. As a result, many astigmatic patients experienced less than optimal vision and/or vision discomfort and became reliant on glasses only, which aren’t always practical in some situations.
Contact Lenses for Patients with Astigmatism
The good news is patients with astigmatism now have a choice and can wear glasses and contact lenses. Toric contact lenses, a type of contact lens specifically designed to correct astigmatism, counteract the distortion caused by the irregular corneal curvature. These advanced technology contact lenses enable wearers to take on their day from any angle, confident that their contacts will stay in place and help them see clearly in any situation. They are available in different materials, and a full range of daily and monthly disposable lenses, as well as multifocal lenses, ensure optimal comfort and performance. When asked, 84 percent of patients say they choose their vision solution based on different situations.
